“Can I add a video to my home page?”

The featured video section adds a full-width video block to your home page. The video plays automatically and is muted. Think of it like a slideshow.

You can see a featured video at work on the Modern demo.

You’ll need to upload an MP4 video to Shopify to use this feature. You can’t embed a video from YouTube, Vimeo or any other video service. To find out how, see Upload a video.

Video dimensions

We recommend using a wide-screen format video for the featured video section, whether that’s a standard 15:9 wide-screen video or 3:2 wide-screen video. Using square or portrait-oriented videos will result in the picture being cropped on the top and bottom.

While shorter, smaller videos load faster, we recommend wide-screen video files at least 1080 pixels wide.

The diagram below demonstrates how videos with a 2:3 aspect ratio (portrait), 1:1 aspect ratio (square) and 2:3 aspect ratio (landscape) are cropped for the featured video section:

Upload a video

You’ll need an MP4 video if you plan to use Video link setting for mosaic grid sections. We recommend using a 20- to 30-second video that’s under 10MB.

You need to host a video file that is accessible as a direct URL. Video embeds from YouTube, Vimeo or other video streaming services do not work.

You can use the Shopify Files uploader to host video files that are smaller than 20MB:

  1. Go to the Shopify Files uploader screen in your Shopify dashboard.
  2. Use the Upload files button to add a video file from your computer.
  3. Once it has been uploaded, copy the URL next to the file. It should look something like this: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0074/8165/5349/files/my-video-filename.mp4.
  4. Paste the link into the video URL field in the section settings.
