“How do I use the alternate product page template?”

You can also set products of your choice to use an alternate, full-bleed product template. You can see this in action on the Handmade demo.

Alternate product template

To enable the alternate product page style for one of your products, navigate in your Shopify admin area to the Products section and start editing the product that you want to apply the alternate product page style to.

Once you’re editing your product, find the Templates settings on the right side of the product editor. Change the template from product to product.alternate.

Set up the alternate product template

The alternate product page has the same page settings as regular product pages. However, it also includes a few other perks:

Product (alternate) pages settings

The alternate product page has the same page settings as regular product pages, but requires you to set them specifically for alternate pages.

To access the alternate product page settings, you need to navigate to a product in your store that is using the product.alternate page template while you are customizing the theme settings. If you are having trouble finding these settings, follow these instructions:

  1. Ensure you have a product using the product.alternate page template. See the first section of this article if you need help.
  2. From your Shopify admin, to the Online Store > Themes page and use the Customize theme button to start customizing your theme.
  3. In the preview of your store on the right side of the page, navigate to your product that uses the product.alternate page template.
  4. Open the Product (alternate) pages settings.

For settings information, see the product pages article.

How do I make my alternate product pages look great?

To make the most of the alternate product page layout, you’re going to want to use high resolution images that are big enough to be displayed as the background of your store. We recommend using portrait-oriented images.

The selected product image is displayed as the background of your store, from edge to edge of your customer’s web browser window. If you have multiple images of your product, we strongly recommend that all of your images are the same size.

Portrait-oriented images will allow you to better separate the product information from the related items part of the page, and it will ensure that your customer is fully immersed in the product imagery.

If you have images that have lots of “white space” around the product (so that the product is center point of the image, with space around the product that lets it breathe), these images generally work best. The right images leave room for the product title, description and Add to Cart button to shine, too.

If the colors in your image make it difficult to read the product information on the page, you can override the text color for your alternate product pages. See the color settings for more information about the override options.

Here are our recommended image dimensions:

Width Height Aspect ratio
1200 pixels* 1800 pixels* 2:3

* Recommended image dimensions. While we do recommend large images for the alternate product page, watch out for the file size. Files that are too large won’t load quickly and will spoil the illusion for customers with slower internet speeds.

At the bottom of each product page, there is a Related Items slider. The slider collects other products that share a collection with the product being viewed. The customer can then navigate through the related items by using the arrow buttons, or go to one of the other items.
