Slideshow

Theme section

Theme retirement Ira is no longer available on the Shopify theme store. Theme support and updates for current users will end after May 18, 2024. Learn more here.

The Slideshow displays up to 8 auto-rotating slides to showcase your product images. You can fine-tune how your images look, all slide headings and colors, and add a mobile-specific image for the best experience across all devices.

Set up section

Add this section to any template (except Checkout) and use the drag-and-drop handles to re-order its position. You can add this section multiple times with different content and settings.

Editing a template changes all pages that use that template. To edit specific pages, you can create new templates or insert dynamic content with metafields.

STEPS

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Select a Template to edit from the dropdown menu in the top bar.

Learn how to use templates in our Templates guide.

  2. Under Template, click (+) Add section and select Slideshow.

  3. Click and hold the drag-and-drop handles ⋮⋮ to re-order your sections.

Add image slides

Add up to 8 slides with unique images, headings, buttons, and custom colors.

STEPS

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click (+) Add slide and/or click on the Slide block to open the settings.

  2. Under Image, click Select image to upload and select your image file.

There are no required images dimensions. We recommend images that are square (1:1) or landscape (3:2) (wider than tall) with a minimum width of 2050px for optimal quality across all devices.

  3. (Optional.) Under Mobile image, click Select image to upload and select an alternate slide image that will show only on mobile.

You may want a different image that works best with mobile screen dimensions.

  4. Select the Image focal point to choose which section of the image to keep centered within the slide.

This setting ensures the key part of your image appears when cropping occurs.

To turn off cropping, you can set the Slideshow image height to Original.

  5. (Optional.) Click and hold the drag handles ⋮⋮ to rearrange the blocks:

Click Remove block in the block settings to delete a block.

Click the Eye icon to hide or unhide a block.

  6. Click Save.

Add slide headings

Add headings for your slides and change the text size and position.

STEPS

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click the Slide block to open the settings.

  2. Change the Heading text.

We recommended a short title of just a few words.

  3. (Optional.) Add a Mini heading to display above the Heading.

We recommended using the small heading as a label or category for what you're showcasing in the slide, such as "Products", "Collections", or "Blog posts", etc.

  4. Add Subheading text to display below the heading.

We recommend two or three short sentences.

  5. Adjust the Text max width of your headings using the slider.

Experiment with this setting to find a clean visual shape for your text.

  6. Change the position of the slide content by using the Text alignment dropdown.

  7. Change the color of the Heading, Subheading, Button text and the Button background.

We recommend using WebAIM's contrast checker when matching colors to make sure your text is clear and readable for everyone.

  8. (Optional.) Select an Overlay color to display overtop of the image and adjust the Overlay opacity using the slider.

The Overlay lets you control the brightness and tone of images. Use this setting to balance it with other images and to increase contrast with headings so they're readable.

Set the opacity to 0% to turn off the overlay color; set it to 100% to create a solid color slide with no image.

  9. (Optional.) Click the Overlay gradient option to add a color overlay that fades across a range of hues.

You can choose the style, angle, position, and opacity of the gradient. See Shopify's color gradient guide to learn more.

  10. Click Save.

Add buttons

Link to your collections or products or any other page with a call-to-action button. Add Button text to display a button or leave this field blank to make the entire block a clickable link.

STEPS

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click on a Slide block to open the settings.

  2. Select or paste a Link.

Make sure you copy the full URL, including https:// at the start. For example: https://instagram.com/abc123.

  3. Add Button text to display a button underneath the headings.

The entire slide will become a link if no Button text is added.

The most effective button labels ask customers to do something (e.g. Get started, Join us, Shop now). To learn more, read "What is a Call to Action?".

  4. Change the Color for the Button text and Button background.

  5. Click Save.

Section style

Slideshow height (image cropping)

The Slideshow section can display your slides at a Custom height or show your uploaded images with their Original height without cropping.

STEPS

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click on the Slideshow section to open the settings.

  2. Choose to display slides images with a Custom or their Original height (without cropping).

The Custom setting will make all slides uniform in height.

For the Original setting, we recommend uploading images with the same dimensions to avoid irregularity in the slideshow height when rotating.

  3. If Custom height is selected: adjust the Height and Mobile Height of your slide images between 50% to 100% of the maximum height.

When Custom height is set to 50%, the slideshow will always display at half the height of the customer's screen or window height.

  4. Click Save.

Time between slides

By default, multiple slides will rotate. You can choose to display each slide between 2 to 10 seconds.

STEPS

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click on the Slideshow section to open the section settings.

  2. Move the slider to set the time between slides between 2 to 10 seconds.

  3. Click Save.

Enable parallax

The parallax makes it look like the image and text have depth as customers scroll.

STEPS

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click the Slideshow section to open the settings.

  2. Check the Enable parallax option.

  3. Click Save.

Enable full width

By default, the slideshow has margins on side of the slides. In the theme settings, make the slideshow full width and span the entire width of the screen or window without margins.

STEPS

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click the Slideshow section to open the settings.

  2. Check the Enable full width option.

  3. Click Save.
