# Banner

In the **Collection banner** settings, you can customize its overall section style, along with the banner image and description. You can also choose to enable breadcrumb navigation.

## Set up banner heading

In the **Collection banner** settings, you can change the banner heading's **text position** and **text color**, and choose to **hide the collection description**.

The banner text uses the **Heading** and **Body** font styles chosen in the **Theme settings**.

In your theme editor (**Customize**):

1. Click on the **Collection banner** section to open the settings.

   > **Note**: These settings apply to all pages that use the same template. To edit specific pages, you can create multiple templates or use dynamic sources.
2. If you want to hide the **Collection description**, uncheck the **Show collection description** option.
3. Select a **Text position** to change where the collection title and description are displayed inside the banner.

   > There are nine possible positions across the top, middle, or bottom of the banner.

   > Use the **Mobile text position** option for smaller devices.
4. Click the **Text color** swatch to select the color of the heading and description.

   > To add a specific hex code color, click on the field to enter code (e.g. **`#FF0000`**)

   > Choose colors with sufficient contrast between the text and background so it's readable. Learn more about [Accessibility for themes](https://help.fluorescent.co/stiletto/general/editing-themes/accessibility).
5. Click **Save**.

## Set up banner image

By default, the banner will use the image uploaded to the collection settings in your Shopify admin.

Use the style settings to change the image height, define an image focal point, and add a color or gradient overlay on top of your image.

In your theme editor (**Customize**):

1. Click on the **Collection banner** section to open the settings.

2. Check the **Show collection image** to display the collection image.

   > Go to your Shopify admin to change your collection image.
3. (*Optional*.) Use the **Select image** button to replace all collection images with one image for all collection pages.

   > To show different images on different collections, you can create multiple templates or use dynamic sources.
4. (*Optional*.) Select a **Custom** height for the **Banner** a **Custom** or their **Original** height (without cropping).

   > Adjust the **Height** sliders between 50% to 100% of the maximum height of the screen or browser.
5. Use **Image focal points** to specify the main focus of your images. The focal point of your image will remain centered and within frame when your site adapts to different screen sizes.

6. (*Optional*.) Change the **Overlay color** and **Overlay opacity** using the slider to increase the contrast between the text and collection image.

   > These settings help make your text clear and readable. Learn more about Accessibility for themes.

   Set the **Opacity** to **`100%`** to create a solid color banner.
7. (*Optional*) Click the **Overlay gradient** option to add a color overlay that fades across a range of hues.

   > You can choose the style, angle, position, and opacity of the gradient. See Shopify's [color gradient guide](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/themes/theme-structure/color-scheme#gradients) to learn more.
8. Under **Section styles**, you can change the **Padding** around the image. Choose to show spacing at the **Top and bottom**, **Top only**, or **Bottom only**.

   > By default, the section **Padding** is set to **None**.
9. Click **Save**.

### Use dynamic sources for banner image

You can use an image metafield and dynamic source to display unique banner images for collections using the same template.

You might want to use this option if you want to use an image that’s different than the default image uploaded to your collections in the Shopify admin.

**Metafields** allow you to store extra information about your products. In your Shopify admin, you can create and populate custom fields for specific parts of your store (such as products). In your theme editor, you can use dynamic sources to automatically display the correct content from your metafields.

In your Shopify admin:

1. Go to **Settings > Custom data**.
2. Select **Collections.**
3. Click **Add definition**.
4. In the **Name** field, enter a name that describes what the metafield is for. For example: “Banner image”.
5. Under **Access**, select **Storefronts** to allow the metafield to display images on your store.
6. Click **(+) Select type** and select **File**.
7. Under **Validations**, make sure **Accept specific file types** is selected, and uncheck **Videos.**
8. Click **Save**.

**To add images to your collections’ metafields:**

1. From your Shopify admin, go to **Products** > **Collections** and open your collections to add images.
2. Scroll down to the **Metafields** area, and click the banner image metafield you created to select an image.

   > If no image is uploaded to your banner image metafield, the theme will use the default collection image.
3. Click **Save**.

***To insert your metafield as a dynamic source:***

1. In your theme editor (**Customize**), go to the collection template and click **Collection banner** to open the settings.
2. Under **Collection mage banner**, click the **Connect dynamic source** button in the top-right of the image field.
3. Select your custom metafield from the list.
4. Click **Save**.

## Add image overlay

The image **overlay** adds a layer of color to your image. Overlays help balance image and text for clarity and readability.

* Select **colors** the overlay and overlay text
* Change the **opacity** to make the overlay more or less transparent

## Show breadcrumbs

You can display "Breadcrumb links" that show where customers are on your site and allow them to easily return to the previous page.

Breadcrumbs appear at the bottom-left of the banner when customers have navigated to the collection page from another page.
