Image hero

Theme section

The Image hero section provides a highly-customizable feature for your boldest product photos and promotional content. Create a unique section with plenty of content and visual design blocks, video player, multiple buttons, and comprehensive image settings.

Set up section

Add this section to any template (except Checkout) and use the drag-and-drop handles to re-order its position. You can add this section multiple times with different content and settings.

Editing a template changes all pages that use that template. To edit specific pages, you can you can create new templates or insert dynamic content with metafields.

STEPS

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Select a Template to edit from the dropdown menu in the top bar.

  2. Under Template, click (+) Add section and select Image hero.

  3. Click and hold the drag-and-drop handles ⋮⋮ to re-order your sections.

Upload an image and customize it’s size, focal point, and overlay colors. You can uploaded an alternate mobile-specific image to appear on smaller screen sizes.

STEPS

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click the Image hero section to open the settings.

  2. Click Select image to upload and select an image file.

    There are no required images dimensions. We simply recommend uploaded images have a minimum width of 2500px for optimal quality across all devices.

  3. (Optional.) Upload a Mobile image to display only on mobile devices.

    You can use an alternate image to accommodate for re-sizing, cropping, and heading text on mobile screens. For example, you might use an image with a portrait orientation instead of landscape.

  4. Choose to Enable full width to make your image span across the entire screen. Uncheck this option to show margins on both sides of the image.

  5. Change the Banner height to set a maximum or fixed height of your image.

    Select Adapt to image to display the full height of your image without cropping. We recommend using this option for square or landscape orientations, so visitors won’t have to scroll down to see the full image.

    Select Custom to set a Custom height for desktop and mobile screens. Choose a Fixed height (in pixels) or Relative height (as a percentage of the window height).

  6. Use Image focal points to specify the main focus of your images. The focal point of your image will remain centered and within frame when your site adapts to different screen sizes.

  7. Use the Tint opacity slider to change the transparency of the overlay color.

    Set the opacity to 0% to turn off the overlay color. If set to 100%, the overlay will be opaque.

    The default Tint color is selected in your theme settings. You can select a custom tint color for this section by following the steps below.

  8. Select a Tint style to use either a Solid overlay color or Gradient overlay for the tint.

    The gradient style fades across a range of hues. You can select one of four options to set the angle and direction of the gradient fade.

  9. Click Save.

Add content blocks

The Image hero has three default content blocks: Accent, Heading, and Text. You can edit or remove these blocks and add 7 other types of blocks to customize the section’s content and layout.

Available blocks

Click (+) Add block to find and select the following blocks. Use the drag-and-drop handles ⋮⋮ to change the order of the blocks.

Add a small image with an adjustable size.

Add a button link with call-to-action text.

Add a video that can be played in a popup viewer.

Divider

Add a border to visually separate other blocks.

Spacer

Add a margin of space between blocks.

Add video player

Add a video that visitors can can click to view within a popup video player. You can either use an uploaded .mp4 video in your Shopify files or embed a video from YouTube or Vimeo.

Click (+) Add block and select Video player to add your video.

Add Shopify-hosted video

To use a Shopify-hosted video, upload a .mp4 file to your Shopify admin and select the video in the block settings.

STEPS

In your Shopify admin:

  1. In the side panel, click Content > Files.

  2. Click Upload files to add a .mp4 file from your computer.

    Once your file has been processed, you can go to the next step.

In the theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click the Video player block under the Image hero section.

  2. Under Shopify video, click Select video to select your video and click Done.

  3. Click Save.

Embed video from URL

To embed a video from YouTube or Vimeo, paste the video link in the block settings.

STEPS

In the theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click the Video player block to open the settings.

  2. Under Youtube or Vimeo URL, paste the link of your hosted video.

  3. Click Save.

Add buttons

Add multiple Button blocks to link to your collections, products, or any other page with call-to-action text.

STEPS

In your theme editor (Customize):

  1. Click on a Button block to open the settings.

    Click (+) Add block and select Button to add more. You can delete or hide the block by clicking the trash or eye icons.

  2. Select or paste a URL for the Button link.

  3. Enter text for the Button label.

    The most effective button labels ask customers to do something (e.g. Get started, Join us, Shop now). To learn more, read "What is a Call to Action?"

  4. Change the Button style. Select Primary button (Solid), Secondary button (Solid), Tertiary button (Outline), or Text.

  5. (Optional.) Use the block’s drag-and-drop handle (⋮⋮) to change its position in the section.

  6. Click Save.

Settings reference

Click the Image hero section to find the following settings.

Enable full width

Choose to span the image across the whole window or screen, removing the margins on either side.

Banner height

Set the banner height to either Adapt to image (use your image’s height) or select a Custom height.

Custom desktop height

Choose a Fixed height (in pixels) or Relative height (as a percentage of the window height).

This setting applies when the Banner height is set to Custom.

Custom mobile height

Choose a Fixed height (in pixels) or Relative height (as a percentage of the window height).

This setting applies when the Banner height is set to Custom.

Image

Select an image to display as the hero image. The image will override the color scheme and use the overlay colors selected in your theme settings.

Mobile image

Select an image to display as an hero image for mobile screens. The image will override the color scheme and use the overlay colors selected in your theme settings.

Image focal point

Select the most important part of your image to keep centered. Use focal points to avoid unwanted cropping across different screen sizes. You can specify a focal point for an image used within a section or for an uploaded image file. Learn more in our Image settings guide.

Image link

Paste a URL or select a page to make the entire image a clickable link.

Section Content

Content width

Set the maximum width of the section: between 400 and 1000 pixels. The section will change in size to fit smaller screen sizes.

Text position

Choose the placement of the headings and content blocks within the section. Select one of nine positions.

Mobile text position

Choose the placement of the headings and content blocks within the section. Select one of nine positions.

Image overlay

Text box

Show text box

Choose to show a border around the section content.

Text box style

Select the style of the text box, if enabled. Choose from multiple options to display a Soft drop shadow, Solid drop shadow, or Borders with different thicknesses.

Color scheme

Change the color scheme applied to text block. Select the Default color scheme from your theme settings or select a variant scheme based on the default colors: either Inverse, Soft, Accent, or Sale. You may also select one of the two custom color schemas.

Override with custom colors

Check this option to apply custom colors to the text box.

These colors will override the color scheme.

Text color

Select a custom color for all text in the text box.

This setting applies only if the Override with custom colors option is enabled.

Background color

Select a custom color for background of text box.

This setting applies only if the Override with custom colors option is enabled.

Section style

Top spacing

Increase or decrease the amount of space above the section.

Bottom spacing

Increase or decrease the amount of space below the section.

Enable animation

Choose whether to display visual effects when scrolling, hovering, or interacting with the section. See the Animation guide to learn more.
