Use dynamic sources for banner image

You can use an image metafield and dynamic source to display unique banner images for collections using the same template. You might want to use this option if you want to use an image that’s different than the default image uploaded to your collections in the Shopify admin.

Metafields allow you to store extra information about your products. In your Shopify admin, you can create and populate custom fields for specific parts of your store (such as products). In your theme editor, you can use dynamic sources to automatically display the correct content from your metafields.

STEPS

In your Shopify admin:

  1. Go to Settings > Custom data.

  2. Select Collections.

  3. Click Add definition.

  4. In the Name field, enter a name that describes what the metafield is for. For example: “Banner image”.

  5. Under Access, select Storefronts to allow the metafield to display images on your store.

  6. Click (+) Select type and select File.

  7. Under Validations, make sure Accept specific file types is selected, and uncheck Videos.

  8. Click Save.

To add images to your collections’ metafields:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections and open your collections to add images.

  2. Scroll down to the Metafields area, and click the banner image metafield you created to select an image.

If no image is uploaded to your banner image metafield, the theme will use the default collection image.

  3. Click Save.

To insert your metafield as a dynamic source:

  1. In your theme editor (Customize), go to the collection template and click Collection banner to open the settings.

  2. Under Collection mage banner, click the Connect dynamic source button in the top-right of the image field.

  3. Select your custom metafield from the list.

  4. Click Save.
